Research & Inspiration
May my eyes and ears remain open to the world! Grateful for creativity and nuggets of inspiration in all forms.
Automata
So many delightful creations in this world..one of them being the Automata, mechanical carved "animated" storytelling machine. See these incredible literal looping animations here.
Automatist (artist/engineer) Keith Newstead demonstrates his work and describes his process.
"A way of telling a story through mechanical means" - Oliver Pett
Japanese Mask-Making
Character animation through another medium, wood carving! Really beautiful process and result to witness here by Japanese mask craftsman, Hiroyuki Yamamoto. Couldn't help but feel that the energy and time that goes into creating a single moment is just one similarity between mask making and animation.
Scanimate
See how 70s-80s motion graphics were made and hear the perspective of one of the engineers who worked with them.
Percussion Ensemble at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music
Powerful energy and beautiful sense of motion and timing.
Leonardo’s Notebooks
A compilation and translation of Leonardo da Vinci’s sketches, notes, and writing. This struck a chord with me - on how the artist’s essence is intertwined with their work and the importance of devotion to study and self-reflection/self-development.
“
A painter who has clumsy hands will paint similar hands in his works, and the same will occur with any limb, unless long study has taught him to avoid it. Therefore, O Painter, look carefully what part is most ill-favored in your own person and take particular pains to correct it in your studies. For if you are coarse, your figures will seem the same and devoid of charm; and it is the same with any part that may be good or poor in yourself; it will be shown in some degree in your figures.”
