This original short was created for Hellavision’s Track Attack open submission.It was a super fun brief to work with and Big thanks to the Hellavision team for organizing this community event!!! See below for a full process breakdown! Less shocking, more intelligent.” Concept and Character Design I absolutely adore making music to pair with my animations so the theme of “Music Cartoon” felt serendipitous! The tone of the brief got me excited to make something off the wall, trust my instincts, and work quickly. I took this project from concept to completion in 4 days. I drew inspiration from meme type videos of people playing electronic drum kits with headphones on while imagining their neighbors on the other side of the wall, only hearing a clatter of drum sticks whacking plastic. I wanted to make something from the neighbor’s point of view! This birthed the idea for a party raging late into the night with a little old man on the other side just trying to get some beauty sleep. The main character that came to mind contains elements of both Squidward and Ron Swanson. Pose to pose felt like the best approach to make sure I blocked out the right feelings, refining shapes and adjusting timing as it came together. Working in 12fps, much of the animation is on 2s and 4s (or more), testing how little frames I could get away with while still being readable and comedic. I had a blast not worrying if it was pixel perfect and love how the roughness adds to the charm and humor. Once the animation was finished, I composited in After Effects, inverting the colors because: night. Without dialogue, I wanted to focus on the escalation of emotion through facial expressions and full body poses.&nbsp;It was also important to let the moments breathe to build anticipation and feel like we were sitting in it. No shade to the music I listened to for inspiration while animating, I deeply enjoyed immersing into it and it kept me pumped through the process! For this track, I laid out a 4 on the floor kick drum and 16th note hi-hats, chose some aggressive hard synths to play a repetitive bassline and a brainless melody that regrettably turns into an earworm. It was fun to add low bit chiptune and overdrive effects for grit and finish with a descending pitch envelope to bring down the last note for a “game over” vibe. Overall, I did want it to still feel somewhat like a real song so I threw in a riser and cut out the bass to create transitions, both for when we entered the house and after the character succumbed to his fate. The noise for the party guests was chopped and layered from various free sample audio of playgrounds. The kids are looking at it with such eye-popping awe that it was easy to imagine the treat as larger than life.. maybe because a giant marshmallow is also my fantasy, lol.Highlights include shooting a visual reference for the spin, frame by frame animation for the spin and tea, and finishing with original music and sound design. Also, Munchmallows are alive and well, they're Serbian and made by Jaffa Crvenka.. would love to try one! Preproduction BriefMacdonalds of Glasgow just created a new recipe of Munchmallows specifically to pair with tea. The biscuit is crispy, crunchy, and better than ever at holding up to a fierce dunking. Animation run time between 10-15 seconds to get to the point fast! SynopsisTwo hungry siblings are on the lookout for a snack. After getting a boost up to the table, they lay eyes on a lone Munchmallow. But you can’t enjoy a Munchmallow without a spot of tea! Tidal wave incoming, our little captains charter a teacup and sail the seas just to get a hunk of a larger-than-life Munchmallow. StoryboardsI used a production-oriented approach to laying out the storyboards. It took a bit of fine-tuning but it was worth the extra time spent. I was so eager for this part, I began motion tests and animating before the design phase was complete. This project had me feeling nostalgic for my childhood and I drew a lot of inspiration from the 90s era. Referencing Munchmallow’s current website and branding, solid red is still the primary color and deep blue is very prominent too. The sound needed to follow the narrative too and I was excited to create some original music to help drive the storyline. When the animation is locked, it’s time to take it into Ableton Live! The intro begins with airy heavenly chords layered with drum hits and sound effects to accent the character expressions, with a sprinkle of chimes for a magical feel. The animation still follows the tempo before the music comes in, alluding to the timing of the drop. Key parts of the animation hit on the beat and it really kicks into gear when the camera turns and starts moving toward the Munchmallow. Stereo panning was key to emphasize the sense of motion through the turn. As we move toward the Munchmallow, the beat, bass, and synths drop in to signify that the adventure has begun! The animation is carried through by instrumental sound effects meshing with the song style and rhythm. The typography reveal also receives the magical chimes treatment. Designing the splash reacting to the Munchmallow jumping and dunking was especially challenging, I wanted it to sound massive and bouyant but not intimidating or imposing. It took a lot of experimenting with layering, EQ, pitching, and reverb to get it to feel characterized with the right tone. Featuring my dog, Ruby, who now can add Animation Reference to her resume.. also, speakers on for some original sound design inspired by house music. Made as part of the Monday’s Challenge Theme: Metamorphosis. Each week, participants are given a new color palette and theme to make a 5 second animation before the next week.See below for a full process breakdown! Concept Metamorphosis has been close to my heart throughout my life, beginning with a childhood interest in Greek/Roman mythology and later Ovid’s Metamorphoses, carrying through to a devotion to internal growth and transmutation of my experiences. However, I had a feeling that this was not the time to make something somber and serious! I love a good brain dump with a pen and paper. Immediate ideas included more archetypal concepts and symbolism like the butterfly, moon phases, and changing seasons. This was a necessary place to start but I wanted to keep digging. It was important to me to show not just a material/physical transformation but also consider storytelling with an emotional arc. The Masks of Tragedy and Comedy came up and I began to think more about story structure. What could be sad, funny, and experience significant change in a matter of only 5 seconds? And also begin and end with a seamless loop? Then, I fondly recalled a couple days earlier - Kristen and I were joking about how our dog Ruby seems to have infinite amounts of fur to shake and shed, causing us to always have the vacuum close by. During our conversation, I made the gesture with my body of hunkering down and expanding to “poof” out a new coat of fur.&nbsp; The idea for the character animation was born and I set off into a fresh Photoshop timeline to draw each pose. In Ableton Live, I laid out a bouncy house beat with a subby kick for weight, genre-characteristic cymbals on the backbeat, and rolled percussion elements that move as one. Mystical chords and sparkly arpeggios are layered with shakers to match the shaking motion and add an element of magic. The drums drop out when the fur is expelled, leaving a tone that resonates with delay. The textured percussion enters again as the action continues while risers help build anticipation to the fur poof. Using Ochsner’s script, we developed a design style and 24 characters, storyboards, animation, and sound design.
